This house was built in 1908 by the French army that used to occupy the surrounding forts. It was conceived to serve as seasonal shelter for peasants, who would keep the cereals harvested, as well as animals on the ground floor. It was abandoned after the Second World War, and then in the mid-fifties served as a weekend home. In the late 1980s it was abandoned.
The artist Jenny Alfonso Relova lives in Gaia Luna along with her son Thiephaine, working there all year round.
The project is to create a residence available to artists, giving them the opportunity to conceive, create, share ideas and take a break away from the city within an exceptional natural environment. However, anyone willing to stay is very welcome to do so. It is also possible to rent Gaia Luna for the week or to come and stay for a few days.
We intend to make this place open to all artists and artistic disciplines including writers, actors, painters, filmmakers, dancers, singers, photographers, etc.
Above all, we want to encourage young artists, and do not limit ourselves to those artists of established name and reputation. The main qualities required are talent, enthusiasm, and the desire to create. These will be the keys to enjoying the residence.
At the end of their stay in Gaïa Luna, we will ask each artist to leave an example of their work, such as a book, a painting, a CD or a piece of sculpture so that visitors can enjoy them. They will form an archive and thus a museum in the residence or the open air. We would also like the artists to form a close relationship with the inhabitants of Sospel by giving courses, conferences, and performances.
What do potential residents have to do?
Those who want to spend some time at the residence should provide the following :
1. A letter explaining why they want to come to Gaia Luna together with the dates of their proposed visit (between mid-April to mid-October).
2. A résumé detailing their artistic activities
3. Details of artistic work they have completed. (Photographers, painters, and sculptors can send images of works of art, while musicians, actors, dancers, puppeteers and filmmakers can send DVDs, CDs or USBs. Writers can send books, pamphlets or essays.)
4. A detailed presentation of the project they wish to pursue in Gaia Luna.
Artists can choose from two options:
A- Use their time at the residence to rest, reflect, withdraw from the outside world and, finally, leave a piece of art to the town or the residence. It will be on permanent display for everyone to enjoy. Actors, mime artists and filmmakers will be asked to give a free performance. Every artist will be free to decide what to contribute.
B- Spend their time working. There will be a dedicated open-air workshop for this purpose. The artists will thus be able to share their art with the inhabitants of Sospel, and give courses to both adults and children. They will need to calculate how many weeks they will require at the residence in order to finish their work.
This residence is free for all artists.
